Myth: NEUTRAL PRESSURE
Q: Is Neutral Pressure possible? A: No!
  The Fact is:
There is not a connector available today that is absolutely neutral.

The Reality is:

Even devices described as “neutral” exhibit some degree of a negative displacement and allow reflux in the catheter, which can contribute to increased incidence of intra-luminal clot formation.

Laboratory tests reveal that many of the devices that claim to be neutral truly are not. Lab test results demonstrate these devices clearly exhibit negative displacement upon disconnection.

Put these connectors to the test by simply following these 4 simple steps
Take the “neutral” connector and attach it to a peripheral catheter
Access the connector with a syringe; fully prime the connector and catheter, remove syringe, reattach and assure Prime
Make sure the priming fluid reaches the end of the catheter tip. (Result show best with colored liquid)

Note:
fluid reflux back into the catheter.

INS recommends that positive fluid displacement within the catheter lumen be maintained to prevent reflux of blood and ensure line patency. Most needleless access devices create negative displacement upon disconnection causing blood to reflux into the catheter.

Positive displacement connectors like the MaxPlus are designed to sweep the catheter tip and push fluid out the tip at disconnect. This action reduces the likelihood of reflux thrombi and intraluminal occlusions.

Positive displacement devices do not rely on a clinician’s ability to properly implement a flush/clamp “technique” to create positive pressure. Unlike negative and neutral displacement devices, there is no blood reflux into the catheter at disconnection.

Blood reflux can lead to occlusions which may serve as a rich culture medium for bacteria growth, increasing the risk of infection.

The MaxPlus Needleless Connector
The MaxPlus is the fastest growing needleless connector on the market today. As evidence to its success the MaxPlus is being utilized in a number of facilities who in 2006 were awarded Honor Roll status by the U.S. News and World Report as 'America's Best Hospitals." The nation's top facilities are using the MaxPlus for two main reasons; it significantly lowers Catheter Related Blood Stream infections CRBSIs and catheter line occlusions. Reducing these two complications improves patient outcomes.
